About

Built in the 13th century to control the river. Houses the Naval Museum.

History

Built around 1220 by the Almohads to close the river with a chain stretched to the opposite bank, the Torre del Oro served as defence, prison, chapel and lighthouse. Its name may come from golden tiles that once covered it, or the gold unloaded here from the Americas. Today a naval museum, forever the symbol of Seville as port to the world.
