You are under Las Setas of Sevilla, officially the Metropol Parasol. It is the largest laminated-wood structure in the world, designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer and completed in 2011. The nickname is obvious: these wavy forms, held up by six pillars, look like a forest of giant mushrooms planted in the heart of the city. The project was very controversial when it was built: many Sevillans struggled to accept it in such a historic square. But time has done its work, and Las Setas are now one of the most recognisable symbols of contemporary Sevilla. There are several layers worth exploring. In the basement, the Antiquarium displays Roman and Andalusi remains found during construction: pieces of the urban grid of Hispalis and Islamic Isbiliya. At street level you'll find a food market and bars with terraces. Above, the upper plaza opens up, and from there starts the panoramic skywalk: a wooden serpent that winds across the structure and offers 360-degree views of the old town: the Giralda, San Salvador, the Macarena, the rooftops, the inner courtyards. Visitor tip: come 30 or 40 minutes before sunset. The ticket includes a drink at the top. Watching the sun fall over the Giralda from the skywalk is one of the best day endings Sevilla offers. Bring a charged phone; you will want photos. Then come down for a cold beer with the city already lit.

About

Designed by Jürgen Mayer, opened in 2011, with market, archaeological museum and skywalk.

History

Where the old Encarnación market once stood, the city decided in 2011 to build something different: the world's largest wooden structure. Las Setas, by German architect Jürgen Mayer, share the square with a Roman and Visigothic site (the Antiquarium) and a neighbourhood market. Looking at Seville from its wavy walkway is seeing the city anew.
