You are in front of the Bullring of the Real Maestranza de Caballería of Sevilla, fondly known as La Maestranza. It is one of the oldest and most iconic bullrings in the world. Construction began in 1761 and took more than a century, which explains its peculiar silhouette: not a perfect circle but an oval, the result of slow, multi-generational works. The name comes from the noble Real Maestranza de Caballería, originally devoted to equestrian and military training. Look at the white and ochre façade and the Puerta del Príncipe crowned by columns: through that gate the bullfighters who have triumphed leave on shoulders. That is every matador's dream. Inside, the sand ring, the white tiers, the wooden boxes and the bare brick create an unmistakable image. The bullring holds more than twelve thousand spectators and a history full of legends. Whether or not you are interested in bullfighting, visiting the museum and the arena will help you understand the cultural and artistic weight, also the controversy, of this tradition in Sevilla. You will see old posters, suits of lights, capes, paintings and photographs. Visitor tip: the guided tours are short and well done; in less than an hour you'll have walked museum and ring. Then step out onto Paseo Colón and the Guadalquivir: you are on one of the loveliest spots above the river.
